Upper Limb
Neuro Rehab
Neurological rehabilitation often focuses on mobility and walking. Upper limb function can get less attention. Using your hands, washing, feeding yourself, dressing, writing or holding a cup. That is what we specialise in.
The part of neuro rehab
that gets overlooked
After a stroke, brain injury or diagnosis of a neurological condition, rehabilitation understandably focuses on the big things first. Standing, walking and balance. But for many people, it is the loss of hand and arm function that has the greatest impact on daily life and independence.
Buttoning a shirt, holding cutlery, opening a jar, typing, picking up a child. These are the tasks that define independence and quality of life. They require specialist rehabilitation that goes beyond what general neuro physiotherapy typically provides.
Based in Belfast, Ms Razo is a Certified Hand Therapist with direct neurological rehabilitation experience, working exclusively on the hand, wrist, arm and shoulder. That means specialist assessment, targeted treatment and a rehabilitation plan built entirely around restoring or maintaining your upper limb function.
What we do
differently
General neuro rehabilitation addresses the whole body. Here, the focus is entirely on the upper limb, with a depth of expertise and a range of specialist techniques that are rarely available through standard rehabilitation pathways.
Specialist dynamic and custom thermoplastic splints to manage spasticity, prevent contracture, support weak joints and position the hand and wrist for function. Adjusted and progressed as recovery develops.
Structured programmes to retrain the brain to interpret sensation from the hand and upper limb.
Targeted retraining of muscle activation, coordination and motor control across the hand, wrist, forearm and shoulder. Graded from assisted movement through to functional resistance work.
Task-specific rehabilitation focused on the activities that matter to you. Feeding, dressing, writing, using a phone, preparing meals, returning to work or sport.
Specialist techniques to reduce oedema in the hand and upper limb. Including compression, elevation strategies, manual techniques and movement programmes.
Progressive exercise programmes to restore or maintain joint mobility, rebuild upper limb strength and endurance.
Neurological conditions
treated
Upper limb rehabilitation is provided for a range of neurological conditions. Each requires a different approach and each benefits from the focused, specialist attention that the upper limb demands.
Upper limb rehabilitation following stroke. Addressing weakness, spasticity, sensory loss and impaired hand and arm function.
Management of upper limb symptoms including weakness, tremor, spasticity and fatigue affecting hand and arm function.
Maintaining hand and arm function, managing symptoms plus supporting independence as the condition progresses.
Rehabilitation of upper limb weakness, spasticity, coordination and sensory changes following brain injury.
Upper limb rehabilitation following cervical spinal cord injury. Including splinting, compensatory training and functional re-education.
Assessment and rehabilitation for children and adults with cerebral palsy. Including splinting, sensory re-education, gross-motor and fine motor training.
Who we

FAQs
-
No. You can contact Ms Razo directly without a GP, consultant or specialist referral. If you have existing reports, discharge summaries or imaging, bring these to your first appointment.
-
No. The brain continues to adapt and reorganise well beyond the acute period after stroke. Patients can make meaningful gains in hand and arm function with specialist rehabilitation months or years after a neurological event. Particularly with task-specific and sensory-focused approaches.
-
NHS neuro rehabilitation sometimes focuses more on mobility, transfers, balance and walking. Upper limb function may receive less attention in that setting. Here, the focus is exclusively on the hand, wrist, arm and shoulder. With specialist expertise, neurological rehabilitation of the upper limb is delivered. This focused level of input is rarely available through standard NHS pathways.
-
Upper limb rehabilitation is provided for a range of neurological conditions including stroke, hemiplegia, multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and cerebral palsy. If your condition is not listed, contact the clinic to discuss whether Hand Therapy is appropriate.
-
Your first appointment includes a thorough assessment of hand and upper limb function. You will receive a clear explanation of the findings, what is achievable and an agreed treatment plan.
-
Yes. Both children and adults with neurological conditions affecting the upper limb are treated here, including cerebral palsy plus other congenital and developmental conditions.
-
This depends on your condition, the severity of your symptoms and your goals. Some people benefit from a short course of focused sessions. Others with progressive or complex neurological conditions benefit from ongoing periodic review. A realistic plan is discussed at your first appointment.
